However, as a Placentia Personal Trainer I see many residents jumping into the most random workout Fitness programs, and making some very common mistakes while doing so.

And it’s this starting of an exercise program with no instructions or planning that often leads to burnout…and frustration.

 

So therefore, be sure to avoid these five nasty pitfalls:

  1. Ignoring the warm-up
    I know, warming up is boring…at least I think it is. But the fact is that warming up will get you into that mind state of “Must. Work. Out. Now.” And it will even get you excited to do so. Trust me, I’ve noticed it myself where I walked into the gym grumpy…only to be totally exhilarated 10 minutes later after doing my warm-up. Plus, if you get a warm-up in you will slowly increase your heart rate and prepare your muscles, tendons, and ligaments for the loads that are coming.

     

  2. Going into the sauna right after the workout
    Always try a cool shower first. This allows your heart rate to return to normal while your blood vessels go back to their normal size. If you were to jump straight into a sauna or hot tub, the high temperatures may cause you to feel dizzy or in the worst case…even cause a heart attack. Scary stuff…so just cool down first after a workout.

     
  3. Holding your breath while lifting weights
    Lifting weights will cause your body to need more oxygen, and if you hold your breath while doing this your blood pressure will significantly rise. I always instruct my Placentia and Fullerton Personal Training clients to breathe in through the nose, out through the mouth – this ensures a maximum amount of oxygen entering the lungs.

     
  4. Pushing your heart rate a little too much
    If you just keep on pushing your heart rate up and up, your lungs and heart are being overstressed. Besides, there are far better workouts around that keep you moving and combine core, cardio, and resistance training all in one so you save time and keep the results coming your way.

     
  5. Ankle & Wrist weights
    They look cool, but that’s where it stops (And no, they won’t make your butt or legs more toned) I agree with the theory that your caloric expenditure goes up by using them…but so does your risk of injury in any fast movements.

 

I am going to be honest here. The reason I’m telling you this is because I have made all these mistakes myself. You see, it was only a couple of years ago that I myself was trying to burn off all the fat from my own problem areas.
