        Well, I’m the greatest trainer in the world

        But really I’m just a regular person like you, I was actually pretty chubby when I was a kid
        And it wasn't until I studied every single book on fitness and fat loss and applied it in myself until I started getting in shape

          But since you clicked to read my Story, let's start at the beginning
          My whole family is Dutch
          My Mom was born in 1947 in Amsterdam
          She had 14 brothers and sisters

          In the 70's, she went on an adventure to the USA as an au-pair

          She fell in love with America, and knew she wanted to stay
          So she got her nursing license, green card
          ... and in 1983 she had me

          She decided to raise me on her own, so it has always been just me and her
          But my Mom started feeling that life in Holland was better for kids

          Everyone plays outside, and
           our entire family was there

          So at the age of 8, my Mom decided to move us back to Holland
          In Holland, kids are fit

          They ride bicycles, play soccer every day, and for dinner they eat steak, potatoes, and kale
          And I liked Nachos

          Eventually I started eating like a Dutch boy
          But even though I was doing all the Dutch things, bicycling, learning how to ice skate - I was always picked last at soccer games

          (and that's a big deal)
          My Mom struggled with her weight all her life
          But it had always been my dream to get a 6-pack

          Maybe because I was never in the greatest shape as a kid. Or because I thought it would get me girls

          But in my early twenties I decided to study weight loss, muscle building, and nutrition until I got it right

          It took me 3 years of trial and error

          And eventually I succeeded in getting the body I wanted.
          Around that time my Mom and I were thinking about moving back to the 'land of the free' 🇺🇸

          Holland was great. But... America is America

          The land of opportunity 🦅

          I wanted a Corvette!

          And my Mom loved, loved America

          So we moved, and I landed an engineering job in Irvine, CA…
          Perhaps I was too young at the time, but I was allergic to cubicles

          But it didn't matter much, as I was laid off 4 months later

          In hindsight, this was a blessing in disguise because:
          I Had Always Wanted To Become A Personal Trainer...
          They have the best job in the world. Unlike doctors they prevent illness

          And if you're going to live in America, you might as well do something you love

          So I applied at 14 big gyms. And got hired at one of my last interviews because they were short on trainers.

          "If it doesn't workout, you can always work at the Juice Bar"  - my manager at the time
          I Didn't Come To America To Make Smoothies
          So I hustled hard. Started working on my mindset

          I got all the certifications, went to the seminars, built up a clientele. And after 2 years left to start my own thing

          I had no idea what my 'own thing' was going to be

          This was when 1-on-1 training was the only known solution

          It was going to be a fitness training service. And my original plans were to name it something complicated in Dutch or Latin

          But as I was training one of my clients at the time - she said:

          "Why don't you...
          just, like...
          call it... ,
          straight up... you know,
          like, FITNESS?"

          So... I got myself a DBA and called my business 'Straight-Up Fitness'

          And my 'business' was me... driving to clients homes

          With adjustable dumbbells and an inflatable exercise ball in the trunk of my car
          It Wasn't Easy...
          But nothing is

          I spent more in gas than I made from training. Oatmeal was all I ate

          I told my Mom I was just fine as I listened to 'Think & Grow Rich' on repeat while driving to clients

          Eventually the hustle & grind led me to start an indoor bootcamp in the city of Norwalk, CA - where 99% of my clients were Hispanic

          (this was before 'bootcamps' were a thing).


          The heaviest Dumbbells we had were 20 lbs

          And every day was Cardio 😃
          This made me think...

          Why am I lifting weights for my own workouts...

          And we only do cardio for our own clients?

          It made no sense

          So I turned my gym into a place I'd want to workout myself

          And more importantly, started coaching my clients on what happens outside the gym

          (like food, water, sleep, stress levels, consistency, mindset, steps)

          This is when things took off
          Thanks to an awesome staff and amazing clients, we grew to 3 locations, 17 trainers, serving 1,000+ clients every month

          Things were good...

          Until life changed when my Mom was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer, stage 4c
          When we found out, we both thought it was going to be over soon

          I didn't know how to deal with it. And my Mom started going to Vegas more often
          (she always won big on penny machines)

          As time progressed, going to her chemo treatments, we both acclimated to the uncertainty of it all

          (as far as that's possible)

          My outlook on life changed, and in hindsight - I only remember the positive emotions we had during those times.
          She wound up living another 4 years, after which she passed away as I was holding her hand

          I was 31, and tbh my Mom was the only person I ever truly loved

          So, in order to process it - I did what most men do...

          I didn't process it at all
          I stayed 'busy'
          Kept working

          Opened 2 more gyms

          Bought a nice house. Tried to fill my 'void' with cars and motorcycles

          But I was avoiding it

          In the whole first year that passed, I hadn't even looked at old photo albums of us together. Because I didn't want to go through the pain of processing it

          2, 3, 4 years passed and I thought I was fine
          but deep inside I Felt Like I Was Letting Her Down
          Sounds weird, but I had this feeling she was mad at me for not processing it

          Like I was trying to forget about her

          So I built up the courage to actually go through an old photo album...

          And she had written me notes at every picture
          It was an emotional couple of days

          But it was also a breakthrough - I changed perspectives

          And no longer saw it as happening to me, but for me instead
          Life presented this situation for me to accept, and I leaned into it

          Her last words were to "keep going" and I'd disappoint her if I didn't do just that
          From then on, I started living more 'in the moment'
          Realizing your past is done and doesn't define you

          And your future starts with what you do right now

          That's huge

          In the past, Think & Grow Rich was my bible - it helped me lift off
          Now I started living more of a 'Power of Now' type of life =)
          Here's why i'm telling you all this
          Because Moms have more power than they think

          Not just for love and support, but for inspiration to live healthy as well

          My Mom was never the healthiest person - so I had to seek elsewhere to find it

          But every time I see one of my Mom clients get in shape

          And then she says her son now loves her homemade food...

          Well, I keep a straight face...
          But on the inside, I'm like:
          Moms need to start living healthier lifestyles
          So they become better role models

          And they don't have to go through the misery and despair of cancer treatments, or other nasty diseases that can be prevented with today's actions
